Pathology of Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland is at the base of the brain within the sella tursica.  It is composed of two morphologically and functionally distinct component : Anterior lobe (Adenohypophysis) and Posterior lobe (Neurohypophysis). Pituitary adenoma is the most common sellar neoplasm. It can be hormonally functional or non functional tumor. Loss of acinar architecture and the presence of prominent nucleoli are helpful to distinguish it from normal pituitary. Pituitary carcinoma is a rare case. It is restricted to a tumour of adenohypophysial cells that exhibits cerebrospinal and/or systemic metastasis
